GEEK is back for a second year of gaming fun at Dreamland this February half term and has an action-packed line-up of entertainment to look forward to. Ahead of this year’s festival, which is going to have a space theme(!) here’s 5 things you need to know about the event…
What is GEEK?
GEEK stands for Games Expo East Kent and is a festival of play and games. It’s Kent’s only gaming festival and last year’s event at Dreamland saw around 4500 visitors come along to meet, make and play.
Who is GEEK for?
The festival brings people of all ages together to not only enjoy playing games, but also to learn more about the gaming industry as a whole. It is a family-friendly event and whether you’re into virtual reality, board games, or original 1980s arcade games, there is something for everyone and heaps of nostalgia guaranteed!
What happens at GEEK?
Alongside the hundreds of games to be played and consoles to be tried out, there will be talks and workshops with industry experts, tournaments in Street Fighter V, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, Halo 4 and more, and the Cosplay Masquerade is the perfect opportunity to get dressed up as your favourite character.
This year at GEEK, we’ll also be joined by Jon Campling (King Regis in Final Fantasy, Death Eater in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Gazskull Thrakka in Warhammer40k), who will be signing autographs and taking photos, as well as taking a seat as a guest judge for the Cosplay Masquerade. There's also a chance to test out Tilt Brush with Google Artist in Residence, Chu.
What’s different about GEEK this year?
This year’s event is set to be out of this world as the festival celebrates the 40th anniversary of the original Space Invaders. GEEK will also commemorate the 10th anniversary of the release of Super Smash Brothers Brawl on the Nintendo Wii, a day dedicated to Minecraft will have a cave for build-battles and the Jedi Fight Academy led Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace actor Andrew Lawden, will teach budding Jedi’s lightsaber skills and much more.
Where is it taking place?
GEEK is in the undercover areas of Dreamland including the arcades, roller disco and Hall By The Sea, so any rainy weather won’t spoil the fun! It’s in half term too, so it’s a great activity for families looking for something different to do, with entertainment for all ages.
